Mohamed Adel,
Political activist and blogger, He was born in 1988.

He is remanded in custody pending Case 4118 of 2018 and Case 467 of 2020 in Mansoura General Prison.

Mohamed Adel is known for defending political freedoms and rights in Egypt and for raising awareness on issues of oppression and corruption. He was a prominent activist and blogger during the pre-revolution period and one of the organisers of the April 6th 2008 strike against the corruption of Mubarak's regime. He is also one of the founders of the April 6 Youth Movement. In 2011, he became a leader and organiser of the demonstrations which paved the way for the 25th January 2011 revolution.

In the post-coup period, which is to say, after June 30, because of his rejection of the violence and repression in Egypt, Mohamed Adel was arrested and accused of demonstrating without a permit (in November 2013). He was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and 3 years of police surveillance after serving the sentence, a provision which forces him to spend 12 hours inside the police station every day.

After completing his sentence and while under police surveillance in a police station, he was arrested again on June 18, 2018, and charged with publishing false news in Case No. 5606 of 2018. Days later he was further charged in a new case, the No. 4118 of 2018, on charges of joining an illegal group and publishing false news. He was imprisoned in Mansoura Public Prison, and in December 2020, after more than two years from his arrest, he was charged in a new case, the No. 467 of 2020: while still in prison, he was accused of joining an illegal group and sharing information from inside the prison. This new proceeding proves the Egyptian security’s commitment to keeping him in prison for as long as possible, even at the cost of recycling the charges against him.

It is reported that on January 27, 2021, he was found not guilty in case 5606, but he is still remanded in custody pending the cases 467 and 4118. During the last investigation session for Case 4118 on March 7, his detention was renewed for 15 days pending investigation despite the absence of any evidence to prove his accusation. Similarities can be observed between the charges filed against him in cases 467 and 4118 and those of the case 5606, in which he was found not guilty.
